This is one fine shot. As with many exceptional things it appears deceptively simple. The depth of field is brilliant, with the touch of softness in the foreground and the distinctively soft background framing the detail of the subject really, really well. The composition is classic, with side-weighted main focus drawing the eyes centrally through the otter's eyes/head direction. The four clover flowers add interest and emphasis to the curve of the mid-ground greenery, which again frames the subject nicely (look at the sweep from 3/4 upper left to 1/2-up right side with lowest point under otter's chin). Even the background rushes provide an almost solid background directly behind the subject but a more detailed - but hardly prominent - backdrop to the left side of the shot.
My thoughts. Lovely work Alannah, I really like this.
Your work is almost always enjoyable (that's my own interest in particular subjects speaking and not a comment about your quality, which appears consistently high) and I'm pleased that my comments are well-received.
Regardless of my interests, I always enjoy your work as well as your openness to commentary (especially from a self-confessed "observer" who can shoot a photo about equally well from either end of a camera-thingy).
